This is the second of three posts on CSAs: I’ll help you decide whether a CSA is a good fit, find a CSA near you, and pick the right one for your needs.
If you want to eat healthy, seasonally, and affordably – all while supporting your local economy – community supported agriculture (CSA) may be a great choice for you.
With thousands of CSAs across the country, there’s likely to be (at least) one nearby.
Here’s how to find your CSA options:
At the farmers market
Do you have a favorite stand at the market? Ask whether the farm offers a CSA. They’ll often have flyers on hand or take down your name to send more information. Or use the market to shop around. It’s the perfect place to see the produce on display and ask your questions.
Online
Search directories such as localharvest.org or homegrown.org for U.S. resources, or visit urgenci.net to find your country’s CSA network.
By word of mouth
Ask your friends, family or colleagues which CSAs they’ve enjoyed. Your workplace may even serve as a delivery site already.
At a CSA fair
Search online for a CSA fair near you. They usually take place in early spring and conveniently bring together several local providers at one event.
Through Cooperative Extension
Check with your local Cooperative Extension office for more resources and information. (There are about 2,900 Extension offices across the U.S. “providing research-based knowledge to strengthen the social, economic and environmental well-being of families, communities and agriculture enterprises,” according to the USDA website.)
Once you’ve identified some farms you like, it’s time to choose a CSA you’ll love.
I’ll be writing more in the future on how to get the most out of your CSA, how to buy meat in bulk, and related topics.
